Engines (CF6-80C2)

Overview

STUB — REWRITE
Replace with overview specific to Kalitta fleet variant. ASSUMPTION: CF6-80C2 — confirm before relying.

The 747-400 in Kalitta service is assumed to operate the GE CF6-80C2 (CF6-80C2B1F variant for the -400). It is a high-bypass, two-shaft turbofan rated at ≈ 57,900 lbf takeoff thrust. The N1 fan is driven by the LPT; the N2 core is driven by the HPT. The Electronic Engine Control (EEC) is full-authority on this engine variant.

Components

Engine ModelGE CF6-80C2B1F (verify per tail)
Takeoff Thrust≈ 57,900 lbf @ ISA SL
Bypass Ratio≈ 5.1:1
Fan Diameter93 inches (2.36 m)
N1 Spool1-stage fan + 4-stage LPC + 5-stage LPT
N2 Spool14-stage HPC + 2-stage HPT
EECFull-authority digital, dual channel
IgnitionDual igniters, AC + DC ignition exciters
StarterPneumatic (bleed air)

Engine Start Sequence

  1. Start switch — GND (or AUTO)
  2. N2 rotation begins (starter)
  3. At ≈ 25% N2, fuel control — RUN; ignition + fuel
  4. Lightoff: EGT rises; N1 and N2 accelerate
  5. Starter cutout at ≈ 50% N2 (verify)
  6. Stabilize at idle
CAUTION — Hung Start / Hot Start

If EGT approaches limit or rotation fails to accelerate: Fuel — CUTOFF immediately. Motor engine to cool.

Limits

| Parameter | Limit | Note | |---|---|---| | N1 | 117.5% max | Takeoff | | N2 | 112.5% max | All phases | | EGT — Takeoff | 960 °C | 5 min | | EGT — MCT | 925 °C | Continuous | | Oil press min | 40 psi | | | Oil temp continuous max | 155 °C | | | Starter duty cycle | per AOM | Verify cycles |

Failures & Abnormals

MEMORY ITEM — Engine Fire / Severe Damage / Separation
  1. A/T (affected) — DISCONNECT
  2. Thrust lever (affected) — CLOSE
  3. Fuel control switch (affected) — CUTOFF
  4. Engine fire handle (affected) — PULL
  5. If fire after 30 sec — rotate handle to discharge
  6. If still fire — rotate other direction (2nd bottle)
